About Lazy Crazy Acres
Our family has been farming this particular piece of land since the 1920’s and have been farming within a 15 minute drive for close to 200 years. Lazy Crazy Acres is home to lovely grass eatin’-mountainside wanderin’ dairy herd and a brand spankin’ new creamery situated right inside our historic barn!
In 2009, when the economy crashed, we were financially forced to sell our cows. We were heartbroken and knew we were determined to figure out how to farm again. In the fall of 2010 NY state finally approved a micro-dairy creamery system which would change our world. We started making plans. We knew we would not financially be able to afford building a brand new space for a creamery and so we used space in our existing dairy barn which had previously been used to house the raw milk in bulk tanks.
We worked closely with our friends, the DiBenedetto Family, who own Crystal Valley Farm. They had a few of our cows and their daughters in their herd. The DiBenedetto’s knew they eventually wanted to bottle milk under their farm name. So we worked together as we have for over 20 years. The cows were milked on their farm. The heifers (young cows) were raised on ours. We made hay together and shared equipment. We installed the creamery in our barn where we made Lazy Crazy Acres gelato and bottled Crystal Valley Creamline milk.
We knew that eventually our goal would be to have the milking cows back with us on the Lazy Crazy farmstead. After all, we are making this delicious gelato to support our farming addiction. Well, the time has arrived! By June 2012 we will have New York’s first and only mobile milking parlor. We’ll be milking the cows out on pasture. We are beyond excited! The best bottled milk of all time will be from the herd at Crystal Valley Farm. The best farmstead “cow to cone” gelato will come from the herd at Lazy Crazy Acres.
